Prof. Shimshack Presents at the World Congress of Environmental
and Resource Economists
Prof. Jay P. Shimshack presented 2 papers at the World Congress of
Environmental and Resource Economists in Kyoto, Japan. Shimshack
presented "Enforcement and Over-Compliance" on July 4 and "Mandatory
Information Disclosure and Environmental Performance in the
Electricity Industry" on July 6. He also served as a discussant for
a research session entitled "Policy Innovations in Environmental
Management."

Prof. Metcalf Presents his Research to the Advisory Board of the
Global Trade Analysis Project
Prof. Gilbert E. Metcalf made a presentation to the Advisory Board
of the Global Trade Analysis Project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in
June. Metcalf presented results from his research with the MIT Joint
Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change on measuring tax
rates in international data sets.

Commencement Weekend Events for Graduates in Economics
On Saturday, May 20, the Department of Economics hosted a wine and
cheese reception for Economics graduates, family, friends, and
faculty members. The reception was held from 4:00-6:00pm in Braker
Hall.
On Sunday, May 21, following the All-University Commencement
Ceremony, which began at 9:00am on the academic quad, Economics
graduates, their guests, and faculty members had lunch at 11:00am on
the lawn adjacent to Tisch Library. The Department of Economics
degree ceremony was then held from 1:30-3:00pm at the Alumni Field
Tent.

Prof. Tan Presents Seminars at the University of Washington
Prof. Chih Ming Tan presented his work (joint with Prof. Steven Durlauf, University of Wisconsin, and Prof. Andros Kourtellos,
University of Cyprus) entitled "God is in the Details: A
Reexamination of the Role of Religion in Economic Growth" at the
Center for Statistics and Social Sciences on May 3 and at the
Department of Economics on May 5.

Prof. Spolaore to Present at NBER and Princeton
Prof. Enrico Spolaore and his co-author Romain Wacziarg of Stanford
presented their paper "The Diffusion of Development" at the NBER
Political Economy conference in Cambridge on May 6th and at the
Political Institutions and Economic Policy (PIEP) conference in
Princeton (Center for Globalization and Governance) on May 13th.

Prof. Metcalf Presents at MIT, Harvard, and Yale
During April, Prof. Gilbert E. Metcalf presented his paper "Energy
Conservation in the United States: Understanding its Role in Climate
Policy" at MIT's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global
Change, Harvard University Kennedy School of Government's
Environmental Economics and Policy Seminar, and Yale School of
Management's Environmental Economics Seminar.

Two New Faculty Members to Join the Department of Economics this
Fall
The Department of Economics proudly announces the addition of two
new faculty members in the Fall of 2006: Prof. Rajeev Dehejia of
Columbia University, whose fields are Applied Microeconomics, Labor
Economics, Econometrics and Development Economics, and
Joshua Fischman, who is receiving his Ph.D. from MIT and whose fields are
Law and Economics and Political Economy.

Reconsidered."

Prof. Spolaore Presents at Brigham Young University
On March 30 and 31, Prof. Enrico Spolaore gave a lecture and a
research seminar at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The
lecture, on the Size of Nations, was addressed to BYU
undergraduates, while the research seminar, on the Diffusion of
Development, was addressed to BYU economics faculty.

Prof. Tan Presents Seminar at the University of
Connecticut-Storrs
On March 24, Prof. Chih Ming Tan gave a seminar at the University of
Connecticut-Storrs entitled "God is in the Details: A Reexamination

Tufts' Economics Department Ranks Highest in terms of Percentage
of Black Faculty Members
According to a survey done by The Journal of Blacks in Higher
Education (JBHE), Tufts University's Department of Economics ranks
number one out of the Economics departments of the 30 highest-ranked
universities for the percentage of black economists among the
faculty.

On March 21, Prof. Dan Richards gave a talk on merger policy at the
Canadian Bureau of Competition in Ottawa entitled "Merger Theory and
Evidence: The Baby Food Case Reconsidered."

Prof. Metcalf Presents at Energy Efficiency Conference in
Washington, D.C.
Prof. Gilbert Metcalf gave a presentation on Energy Efficiency at a
conference in Washington, D.C., held March 2-3, titled "The
Economics of Climate Change: Understanding Transatlantic
Differences," sponsored by Resources For the Future and the UK
Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The conference
was a two-day program designed to draw out the key issues, encourage
discussion, and develop a keener understanding of how to move
forward in light of transatlantic differences concerning climate
change economics. Resources For the Future is a Washington-based
independent institute dedicated exclusively to analyzing
environmental, energy, and natural resource topics.
Prof. Metcalf is currently a visiting professor at the MIT Joint
Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change working on issues
involving energy efficiency and taxation in global climate models.
