Why Tufts?
Student Life
The Students
Tufts' Faculty of Arts and Sciences typically enroll students from all 50
states of the U.S. and from over 100 foreign countries. The student
population in the M.A. Program in Economics is similarly diverse. Recent
classes have included, in addition to US students, students from Bolivia,
Croatia, Greece, India, the People's Republic of China, Canada, the
Netherlands, England, and Turkey. At both the faculty and the student
levels, the Tufts Economics Department has a strong commitment to diversity
and gender equity. Forty percent of the faculty and nearly fifty percent of
the incoming students are women.
Upon receiving their degree, students pursue a variety of options. About one
fifth of each class goes on to pursue a Ph.D. program in economics or related
subjects, such as finance and accounting. The preparation received at Tufts
provides students with an exceptional background for such study. In recent
years, graduates of the Tufts M.A. program have been admitted to Ph.D. programs
at European University Institute, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, MIT, Northwestern,
UCLA, Boston University, and the University of Wisconsin.
An additional one third of the program graduates find employment in either
consulting firms or government agencies, including DRI, Analysis Group,
National Economic Research Associates, EPA, and the Department of Commerce.
The remaining third of students pursues a variety of careers such as teaching
(either at community colleges or private secondary schools), working in the
financial sector, or conducting research at various institutions such as the
American Enterprise Institute.
Life at Tufts
Tufts' Medford Campus is located on a hill along the Medford-Somerville border,
about five miles northwest of Boston. This campus location provides a tranquil
New England setting and yet also allows easy access by subway or bus to the
cultural, entertainment, and academic resources of Boston and Cambridge. The
nearby Davis Square subway station is only two stops from Harvard Square, four
stops from MIT, and five stops from downtown Boston!
Tufts was founded in 1852 and has maintained a long tradition of excellence in
liberal arts education. The 51 departments and programs that make up the Faculty
of Arts and Sciences offer a rich and varied list of course offerings and degree
programs. These departments offer 29 programs that lead to a masters degree and
14 programs that lead to a Ph.D. Tufts also offers a wide variety of professional
schools, including the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the Medical School,
the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Engineering. The Medford
Campus, with about 4,500 undergraduate students and 1,600 graduate students,
serves the as the administrative center of the University and houses the Faculty
of Arts and Sciences and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
Housing
The suburban location and good transportation access of Tufts' Medford Campus
creates a variety of housing options. Students who prefer to live in a city will
find it easy to live in Boston and take the subway to school. Students who prefer
a rural setting will find it easy to live outside the metro area and drive to
school. Most students, however, will prefer to live within easy walking or bicycling
distance of the campus.
There are many private landlords offering apartment or house rentals in the
Medford/Somerville area. These range in style from single family houses to
condominiums to apartment buildings, but much of the rental housing takes the form
of large, multi-family houses. In some cases, a group of students will rent one of
these houses and share the costs. In other cases, the houses have been divided into
smaller apartments and one or two students will rent an apartment. One of the easiest
ways to tap into this market is to find another student who already has an apartment,
but is looking for a roommate. Advertisements for roommates usually appear at the
beginning and end of each semester and appear in local and campus newspapers, on
campus bulletin boards and in the Tufts' Campus Housing Office.
Tufts provides a limited number of residential facilities that are available to
graduate students. Contact the Campus Housing Office at (617) 627-3248 for applications
and additional information. The Walnut Hill Properties Corporation, a Tufts University
affiliate, owns and manages a number of unfurnished apartments within walking distance
of the Medford campus. There is often a waiting list for these apartments and you
should contact the Walnut Hill office at (617) 391-5300 to inquire about their availability.
Graduate Student Council
The Graduate Student Council is an organization that represents the interests of graduate
students at Tufts. The Council is involved in the full range of graduate student concerns.
Its activities range from participating in the administrative oversight of graduate
programs to sponsoring social events to helping graduate students find housing.
Visit the GSC web site
for additional information about the council's activities!
