Admission

Students with good credentials in any discipline may apply to the program, but successful applicants will demonstrate an ability in economics and/or mathematics. Applicants to the program should have completed the work required for a baccalaureate degree. All applicants, with the exception of Tufts undergraduate students in Arts and Sciences, must submit the results of the Graduate Record Examination. In addition, applicants must submit an application form, three letters of recommendation from persons capable of assessing the student's potential for graduate study, a personal statement indicating why they wish to earn an advanced degree in Economics, and transcripts from all degree programs in which they have been enrolled.

Applications for Fall admission are due by February 15. However, please note that international applications for Fall admission are due by December 15. Applications submitted after these dates will be considered on a case by case basis. However, it is strongly recommended that applications for financial aid be submitted by February 15. Because the graduate course sequence begins in the fall semester and the first semester courses are not repeated in the spring, the department does not admit students at midyear.

Requests for application forms should be directed to Graduate and Professional Studies at the address below. All application materials should be submitted before applications can be considered. All materials should be sent directly to:

Graduate and Professional Studies
Ballou Hall
Tufts University
Medford, Massachusetts 02155

Application forms are available from the Graduate and Professional Studies Office.

Admission of Foreign Students

Applicants whose native language is not English must show evidence of proficiency in English in order to be considered for admission. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. The Department of Economics normally accepts a score of 600 or higher on the TOEFL's paper version (or 250 or higher on the TOEFL computer version, or a total minimum score of 90 on the TOEFL iBT with a score of 21 or above in any section strongly recommended). In addition to the TOEFL, it is also strongly recommended that candidates who apply for financial aid in the Department of Economics submit a score for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An IELTS score of 7.5 or higher is normally required for potential appointment as a teaching assistant. Note that the IELTS may be used as a substitute for the TOEFL.

For foreign students not residing in the United States, the Graduate School must receive notification of their intention to accept Tufts' offer of admission prior to May 15.

* The Test of Spoken English™ (TSE®) has been discontinued as of March 31, 2010. TSE scores are valid for two years from the test date. During that time, TSE scores can be sent to institutions and agencies.

Residence Requirement

In order to receive the M.S. degree, a student must meet a one academic year residence requirement. This means he or she is obligated to pay tuition for two semesters unless a portion of tuition is waived through a tuition scholarship.
