Professor Norman received his Ph.D. in 1977 from King's College, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England. He came to Tufts as a visiting scholar in September 1995 and joined the faculty as a tenured full professor in September 1996. Professor Norman was the Director of the graduate program in economics at Tufts from 1997-2000. In 1998 he was appointed as the first holder of the William and Joyce Cummings Family Chair in Entrepreneurship and Business Economics. Professor Norman received the 2002 Lerman-Neubauer Prize for Outstanding Teaching and Advising, awarded to one member of the faculty judged by graduating seniors as having had a profound effect on them intellectually. Prior to coming to Tufts, he was Head of Department of Economics, University of Edinburgh. Prior to his position there he was Head of Department of Economics, University of Leicester. Professor Norman's current interests lie in the general field of modern industrial organization. Specific interests are in mergers and merger policy, technology choice and the structural effects of market deregulation. He is currently an Associate Editor of Regional Science and Urban Economics and Bulletin of Economic Research. He has authored and edited numerous books including, Economies of Scale, Transport Costs, and Location and Spatial Pricing and Differentiated Markets. He has published in many leading journals including: American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Economic Journal, International Economic Review, Journal of Industrial Economics, Economica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Economics Letters, Regional Science and Urban Economics, and International Journal of Industrial Organization. He is also the author (with D. Richards and L. Pepall) of Industrial Organization: Contemporary Theory and Practice.
