What is wind power???When people use power either at home, in school or at work they are using whatever power is provided by their energy company. This energy often comes from dirty fossil fuel. Wind power is an alternative clean renewable energy source from wind. Where does Tufts get its power?Tufts University gets its power from TransCanada via the New England Power Grid. The power is approximately 80% hydro and 20% natural gas. Why is wind power better?Wind power is a cleaner power alternative because it generates less emissions and does not destroy ecosystems the way large hydro dams do. Why are fossil fuel emissions bad? When fossil fuels are burned they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which causes global warming. Also, some fossil fuels contain impurities like sulfur which when released into the atmosphere cause other negative effects like acid rain. Where would the wind power money go?If the fee is increased Tufts will use the money to purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) from a wind power provider. The purchase will not directly change the energy used by Tufts, but instead will maximize global benefit by replacing dirtier power in regions which use primarily fossil fuel. Why are we voting again?Last year a referendum was held by ECO (Environmental Consciousness Outreach) to show student support for wind power, but the results were invalidated because of a technicality! If you think Tufts should buy wind power then vote YES on 4/20. This is also the date of the Tufts Community Union Senate elections so you can vote for everything all at once. How do I vote? The reVOTE is on THURSDAY APRIL 20th during Earth
Week. Thanks!!! Vote Wind on 4/20!!!More Info |
