The First Game (by Jim Pistrang)
The first Tufts intercollegiate game was played against Clark, 1 week after the Rutgers-Princeton game. We were ready to play earlier, but Irv Kalb (Rutgers) went ballistic when he heard we might upstage him, & we caved in to the pressure. The game was played at Clark, & the Tufts team wore matching yellow t-shirts that said 'Boston Cycle' on them, curtesy of Yutaka Yoshino ('74 if he graduated) who was a part-time motorcycle mechanic.
I think we had 11 players, & we won fairly easily. Some of the players were:
Jim Pistrang(76)*
Ed Summers (76)*
Mike Miller (74)*
Steve Goldstein (76)
Pam Dyer (74)
Yutaka Yoshino (74)
others who MAY have been there:
Steve Turnamian (76)
Dave Rosania (75)
Eduardo Poma (76)
Craig McRae (74)
* captains
The Clark captains were Steve Freeman (Columbia HS '72) and Walter Belding (?). Walter had a black dog named Dylan, which wasn't unusual...back then it seemed that most Ultimate teams were accompanied by a dog named Dylan.
PS: Yutaka, who BTW was a great guy with very few Ultimate skills, often played with a lit cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth...quite a sight to see...
