Drama Program: Graduate Program

Financial Aid

Fellowship Funds
There is a limited number of one-year fellowships awarded to incoming students. They offer a stipend and a full tuition Ph.D. remission. These fellowships are not renewable.

Tuition Remission
Tuition scholarships consist of remission of part of a student’s tuition fees. Awards are based on evidence of scholarly competence and financial need. All Ph.D. candidates admitted to the program are awarded a full tuition scholarship.

Teaching Assistantships
In addition to a stipend, graduate assistantships automatically carry a tuition remission. Most assistantships require approximately 6-8 hours of work per week, but some are more demanding. Teaching assistants normally instruct a section of Introduction to Acting (DR 10) or serve as graders in other courses. Among students eligible or teaching assistantships, preference is given to Ph.D. candidates with high academic records; they must have already spent a year in the Graduate Program. For Dr 10, the assistant must have significant acting and/or directing experience, and a reference to that effect; also, if the assistant has not previously taught acting, he or she must observe a section of DR 10 prior to teaching. There is a required university-wide workshop for all first-time teaching assistants held before Fall semester. Assistantships are awarded for no more than two years.

Assistance Fund
Cash awards (approximately $800 per year) may be provided by the Department in compensation for dissertation research and conference-related travel expenses. Similar travel funds may also be requested from the Graduate School and Graduate Student Council.

Prerequisites
All types of financial aid from the Department and/or Graduate School require the maintenance of at least a "B" average in course at Tufts, no more than one incomplete, and no incomplete carried beyond a semester. Failure to meet these requirements may cause loss of the assistantship or fellowship. In the spring semester of each year in residence the student will submit departmental financial assistance forms in order to be considered for aid in the upcoming year.
