Graduate Students

Heather Phillips

Heather Phillips, known to many as "Hesse," is a third-year PhD student. Hesse is originally from Pittsburgh, but considers herself a Vermonter in honour of her time spent at Marlboro College, where she wrote her senior thesis on queer themes in Marlowe and Shakespeare. Now her interests range from Chinese eco-theatre to Neoclassical theories of audience reception; from translation studies to dance iconography. She has appeared as the "fat funny lady" in a number of Shakespeare's plays; and started writing, directing and producing her own stage and radio plays in high school. She is looking forward to teaching her first course at Tufts this fall, "Expression and Performance," in which she will return to her first love of acting, voice and speech for the actor.
