About the Department

The Department of Drama and Dance provides a strong liberal arts approach to the intellectual, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of performance. Our program integrates acting, design, dramatic literature, directing, dance, technical theatre, and theatre history. Whether through immersion in literature and history or participation in productions, our curriculum fosters creative, critical, and collaborative thinking.

Our department offers a variety of courses, complemented by an active season of productions. Students explore a wide range of styles and techniques in class, as well as in rehearsal and performance. Both by study and practice, our students develop powers of intellect and imagination. They learn to think precisely in the moment, to speak confidently in public, to write with clarity and intelligence, and to work productively with others. Whatever your particular area of interest within the field may be, you will be able to define it and explore it at Tufts.

The performance of drama, dance, and film creates an immediate, physical relationship to major themes of life for audience and performers alike. They are art forms based on human communication, arenas where psychology, politics, religion, and gender all come into play. Drama and dance have forever been powerful forces in world civilization and are an imaginative mirror, both reflective and refractive.

A variety of course offerings is complemented by an active season of productions so that artistic and critical skills can be applied and understood in the context of live performance. Courses and productions are open to all Tufts students, regardless of major. All of our courses fulfill the arts distribution requirement except Drama 27 (Public Speaking), which fulfills the humanities distribution requirement.
