Since 1986 the Center for Science and Mathematics Teaching at
Tufts University
has successfully addressed a problem that has become a national
priority: improving the teaching and learning of science in the
nation's schools and universities. The Center, directed by Ronald
Thornton, develops curricula, activities, and computer tools which
allow students to participate actively in their own learning and to
construct scientific knowledge for themselves. Using these materials
the students learn directly from the physical world. The Center's
substantial conceptual-learning research and evaluation program
guides the development of materials.
