Workshop participants are eligible to apply to the Summer Program. Those selected meet during the summer and the following academic year to discuss their development of innovative courses and curricula that promote undergraduates’ reasoning abilities. Participating faculty are concerned that their students master the material and concepts of a subject, but also acquire a clear understanding of the methods and modes of thinking that are crucial to the field.

Since critical thinking skills are common to many subject areas, students who take a course that emphasizes these skills will transfer them to the study of other subjects. Although course development and revision is part of a professor’s job, a stipend is offered as an incentive for faculty to work to develop strategies for teaching their subject matter in ways that incorporate the explicit teaching of reasoning and analytic skills.
