Mission
and Philosophy
The college years bring with them rapid personal changes and
important transitions. These experiences can be both exciting
and challenging. In this context, most students, at one time or
other, will experience various personal, emotional, and/or
interpersonal concerns. The supports students may turn to in
these situations include family, friends, spiritual supports,
academic supports, and professional counseling.
At CMHS, we strive to help students address their concerns and
build on their strengths, in order to make the most of their
college experience. Although we do provide services for students
in mental-health crises, our primary goal is prevention. Thus,
we make every effort to assist students before their concerns
may develop into more serious problems. Our three fold approach
emphasizes prevention, consultation, and intervention.
CMHS is staffed by professionally trained counselors who have
special expertise in working with college students. We take a
holistic approach to each student, and value each person's
unique identity. We welcome and respect human diversity in all
its forms, including racial, ethnic, and national backgrounds,
sexual orientation and gender identity, mental and physical
ability, language, age, spiritual belief, and socioeconomic
status.
