Summer Internships
If you are interested in doing a communications internship for credit this summer, contact Susan Eisenhauer (susan.eisenhauer@tufts.edu, x72007) about eligibility, consent, and registration. It is possible to receive credit “long distance” while interning in cities other than just Boston.

CMS and Career Services jointly sponsored an internship panel on Oct. 20, 2008. Six Tufts students who have done media internships in Boston, New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere, gave advice to other students about finding internships and getting the most out of them.

Communications and Media Studies grants pass/fail credit for internships in communications (television and radio stations, newspapers and magazine advertising and public relations agencies, publishing houses, and film production companies). Internships are available during both academic semesters as well as during the summer months. Students must work a minimum of 150 hours during the semester, write four short papers, and meet regularly with the faculty advisor.

Many students choose to do more than one internship, and some choose to intern during the summer as well. Summer internships in recent years have included The Late Show with David Letterman, Dateline NBC, CBS-TV, WGBH-TV, National Public Radio, and The Atlantic Monthly.

In addition to learning how the media industry operates and influences the public, students who intern also learn about interpersonal dynamics, improve verbal and written communication skills, and establish contacts with professionals. Occasionally, students are able to turn internships into job placements after graduation. All students gain a greater degree of self confidence, increase their knowledge of media as a possible career path, and make valuable contacts. To find an internship, students can utilize the CMS internship binders at 95 Talbot Ave., as well as the Tufts Career Connect and MonsterTrak online listings on the Career Services Website. Some students also find the Tufts Career Network useful for networking with alumni about internships and job advice.
