topic, perhaps an incident in history or a character in mythology, to study in detail. You will then write an extended scholarly essay, 60-80 pages long, about your topic.  The only pre-requisite for a senior honors thesis is that you must have been on the Dean's List at least once before your senior year.

The following timetable gives the main steps.

    * Spring of junior year
          o Know what your general area will be.
          o Select a thesis advisor. This can be any faculty member in the department; it need not be your major advisor.
          o Register for Senior Thesis, a year course, through the department
    * Summer before senior year
          o Background reading: read or re-read the relevant primary sources, and any secondary materials you and your advisor have identified so far.
    * Fall of senior year
          o Determine your specific topic.
          o Working with your thesis advisor, select a second reader from this department and a third reader from outside the department.
          o File the Honors Thesis Candidate Form by 15 November, in Dowling Hall.
          o Meet periodically with your thesis advisor.
          o Complete your research and begin organizing and writing.
    * Spring of senior year
          o Give a complete first draft to your thesis advisor, ideally as early as January.
          o Meet regularly with your thesis advisor.
          o Second and third readers may see later drafts, as you and they consider appropriate.
          o Schedule the defense of your thesis for April.
          o Submit the official bound copy to the Tisch library, the classics department, and your thesis advisor.
          o Your thesis advisor will file the Recommendation for Thesis Honors form.
          o Your thesis honors will be announced at the department's graduation ceremony
.
