History 54: Europe since 1815 |
|
The forces that shaped and characterized the history of Eastern and Western Europe from the Congress of Vienna into the contemporary era. Topics include nationalism, ethnic consciousness, the Industrial Revolution, political ideologies, the development of nation-states, Great Power diplomacy, the impact of the "Eastern Question," the disruptions of the First and Second World Wars, and the current conditions of the European states. The roots of European history in the years directly after the Congress of Vienna of 1815 extend well back into the period of the French Revolution. The ideas of the French Revolution, the spectre of Napoleon and the legacy of Vienna will prove vital forces in Europe well into the nineteenth and to an extent, early twentieth century. This course will examine topics such as nationalism, ethnic consciousness, the Industrial Revolution, political ideologies, the development of nation-states, Great Power diplomacy, the impact of the "Eastern Question," the disruptions of the First and Second World Wars, the current conditions of the European states and recent events in the European Union which have shaken the foundations of modern Europe. Our focus will not just be on western Europe. We will spend significant time examining the development of Russia as well as the states of Central and Southeastern Europe. This course will therefore attempt to provide an overview of the full European continent after 1815 while taking into account the foundations laid prior to the Congress of Vienna. |
