Constitution

  1. Mission Statement

    A. To provide any members of the Tufts Community wishing to play chess with a forum in which to do so.

    B. To teach basic understanding of the rules of chess, for beginning players, as well as critical analysis of the tactics of the game for more advanced players.

    C. To facilitate the exchange of information among chess-playing members of the Tufts Community so that anyone wishing to do so may find an opponent to play and to improve their skills outside of meetings of the Tufts Chess Club as well as at meetings.

  2. Officers

    A. The president shall

    1. Serve as presiding officer at all meetings.
    2. Oversee all activities of the club.

    B. The secretary-treasurer shall

    1. Be in charge of any financial matters of the club.
    2. Be the official signatory on any accounts of the club.
    3. Budget any funding which the club may receive from the TCU.
    4. Be in charge of publicity for all meetings.
    5. Preside over meetings in the absence of the president.

    C. Elections

    1. Any member of the club who has attended at least four meetings in a given semester is eligible to run for office for the following semester.
    2. Any member of the club who has attended at least two meeting in a given semester is eligible to vote in elections held that semester.
    3. Officers shall be elected for a term of one semester.
    4. Elections for officers for the fall semester shall be held in April; elections for officers for the spring semester shall be held in December.
    5. The meeting at which elections are held shall be well-publicized at least one week in advance and a quorum of 50% of the total membership shall be required to conduct elections.
    6. Voting procedure
      • The current president shall conduct elections.
      • Current officers shall not vote in elections unless to break a tie.
      • The president for the coming term shall be elected first, followed by the secretary-treasurer. Members may nominate themselves or another member.
      • The winner of an election shall be the candidate who receives an absolute majority of the votes. If there are more than two candidates, the first round of voting shall serve as a run-off; the two top vote getters will proceed to a final round of voting.
    7. Impeachment of officers
      • At any meeting a member who has attended at least two previous meetings may motion for impeachment of an officer for dereliction of duty or abuse of position. This motion must be seconded. The vote for impeachment shall take place at the next meeting, which will be well publicized.
      • The motion for impeachment must receive the votes of two thirds of the total membership of the club to pass.
      • If the motion to impeach an officer passes, an election to fill the office just vacated for the remainder of the semester shall immediately be held according to the above procedure.
      • If at any time an officer is forced to leave the univeristy due to lack of good standing, he or she shall be considered impeached.

  3. Meetings

    The Tufts Chess club shall meet once a week at a time deemed most convenient. Additional meetings shall be held as deemed desirable or necessary. In addition to weekly meetings, the club may also organize tournaments or compete as a team in competitive settings.

  4. Amending the Constitution

    A. At any meeting any member who has attended at least two previous meetings may motion to amend the constitution. This motion must be seconded. The member who proposes the amendment shall state the revisions or additions desired. The vote to amend the constitution shall be held at the next meeting, which will be well- publicized. Every attempt to provide the entire membership with a text of the proposed changes prior to this meeting shall be made.

    B. The motion to amend the constitution must receive the votes of two thirds of the total membership of the club to pass.
