Program Overview: Sci-Tech Society
The Sci-Tech Society, or STS for short, is the Chemical and Biological
Engineering and Biomedical Engineering graduate student organization.
STS strives to improve faculty-student interactions, promote the discussion of
topics within the student body, and provide a friendly atmosphere for the
graduate students in Chemical and Biological Engineering and Biomedical
Engineering. STS, formally known as CBE-GSA (Chemical and Biological Engineering
Graduate Student Association), was founded in 2002 by a group of graduate
students led by the founding president Tim Harrah. Ever since, STS has been
strongly supported by both departments as well as GSC. Last year, CBE-GSA was
renamed STS in order to represent all the graduate students in the building.
STS holds monthly social events, bi-weekly student research seminars, weekly
sports activities as well as some other special holiday activities.
Our social and sports events are set to provide opportunities for graduate
students to interact with one another on topics of interest, but our society is
not just a social organization. As part of an academic institution, we are
determined to culture scientific discussion and inspire new ideas. This is
accomplished by our bi-weekly seminar series. In these seminars, graduate
students present their work in a non-competitive, casual manner. These seminars
will benefit those who want to know about the research taking place in Sci-Tech
and those who need to practice a presentation before a meeting or a thesis
defense. These seminars provide a great opportunity for students to present
their research, accumulate their presentation skills and improve their
communication with peers.
