Two decades ago, the founders of the Child and Family WebGuide (CFW) were struck by how much bad information and bad advice was being given out over the Internet -- information and advice about serious problems confronting parents, teachers, and medical professionals trying to do their best for children. They decided to do something about the bad information and bad advice and created the CFW to send viewers to the very best websites where information and advice came from good research and good clinical practice. The idea was simple: create excellent ways of evaluating websites that share information and give advice about children and organize them in ways that viewers can quickly gather the information and find the advice they need. This simple idea has remained the mission of the CFW up to the present – even as the CFW has been continuously revised and updated to provide only the best and the latest.


Management and Organization of WebGuide

W. George Scarlett

Senior Lecturer and Deputy Chair of the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development

W. George Scarlett is senior lecturer and deputy chair of the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University. He has authored or co-authored six books and edited the Sage Encyclopedia of Classroom Management, He has been the lead author or co-author of chapters in The Handbook of Child Psychology and The Handbook of Life-Span Development, both leading resources for professionals conducting research on children and adolescents. In addition, he has published numerous articles on a variety of subjects pertaining to children, including articles on behavior management, and he has been on the research teams of several internationally known leaders, including Ed Zigler at Yale (early research on Head Start) and Howard Gardner at Harvard (early research on multiple intelligences). Currently, he is a regular consultant to reporters and news agencies, communicating to the general public best practices for raising and educating children and youth. Email:


William Hilley

Will Hilley is a member of the Tufts Technology Services department that serves the University for information technology needs. He provides technical consulting and help for the Child & Family WebGuide.



CFW Evaluation and Scoring System

We define website for the CFW as a home page, usually with many interior pages. A segment of website is an interior page (or set of related interior pages) that is the topic of our evaluation. 


Segment of websites and websites are reviewed and evaluated based on the following:

Authority: credibility of who is responsible for the website and the segment of website 

Age and Updates: timeliness of information, including the presence and recentness of dates indicating evidence of review or update

References: the presence and respective amount of original documentation, such as citations and/or references

Navigability: how easy or difficult it is to move efficiently through the site through the use of navigational tools or organizational systems 

Functioning Links: whether or not the website has inactive or dysfunctional links 

Mobile-Friendliness: how accessible the segment of website is on a mobile device or tablet 

Language: the extent to which specific content is user-friendly, easily read, and directed towards a lay audience 


Age Range

We have assigned the approximate age ranges for the following ages:

Baby/ Toddler= 0-3 years old, including prenatal information

Pre-School= 3-5 years old

Grade School= 5-12 years old

Adolescence= 12-18 years old
