Epidemiology

Faculty adviser:
Lecturer Mark Woodin, Civil and Environmental Engineering

More and more, professionals working in the health care, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and environmental consulting industries need tools for translating the large volume of health-related research data conveyed in professional publications. New research findings involving data from medical, nutritional, environmental, pharmacological, and other types of biomedical studies challenge the training that most professionals have at their command.

Whether the challenge is to more completely understand the evidence linking exposures to chronic or in infectious diseases to better rationalize the increasingly complex landscape of health care services, or simply to become a better-informed consumer of information in the mass media, familiarity with the basic principles and methods of epidemiology has become increasingly necessary in today's health-conscious environment.

Offered in collaboration with the School of Medicine, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies, this interdisciplinary certificate program is designed to increase understanding and facilitate integration of new research developments. The certificate requires the completion of five courses.

Open to individuals with a bachelor's degree, the program is especially appropriate for clinicians (physicians, veterinarians, dentists, dieticians, nurses, social workers, psychologists), managers in hospitals and public health agencies, human service professionals, lawyers, industrial hygienists, pharmaceutical or biotechnology professionals, and environmental engineers and scientists. Individuals who are placed in positions in which they must provide and interpret epidemiologic findings to the public (board of health workers, members of citizens' groups involved in health issues) will also find the program valuable. The program is well suited to professionals seeking formal training leading to a graduate credential in epidemiology.
