  Programs & Courses: Fieldwork Education

Level I Fieldwork

The goal of Level I fieldwork is to provide an introduction to the fieldwork experience while developing a basic comfort level with and understanding of the needs of clients. Level I fieldwork is completed concurrently with designated coursework. At Tufts, approximately 100 hours of course-related Level I fieldwork is required to be completed.

At Tufts, Level I Fieldwork is a component of the following courses:
OTS 106 Occupation & Adaptation: Child & Adolescent Level I fieldwork occurs during OTS 106 lab times as arranged by instructor at the Lexington Arlington Burlington Belmont Bedford (LABBB) School Collaborative
OTS 219 Group Theory & Community Based Practice Community Based Service Learning Group
OTS 224 OT Practice in Physical Dysfunction
OTS 226 OT Practice in Pediatrics
OTS 227 OT Practice in Psychiatry

Level I Fieldwork Program Design:
Students will participate in five Level I experiences, either alone, in pairs, or in small groups for a maximum of 16-24 hours per courses listed above. The models used will be a combination of observation of aspects of occupational therapy and occupational therapy services (with limited participation) and student run groups, done in community-based settings as part of a community service learning component of the OTS 219 Group Theory & Community Based Practice course.

Students are placed in settings located in the New England area including: MetroWest, North Shore, South Shore, and the Cape Cod vicinities, as well as, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. When possible, OT Practice course Level I fieldwork is part of a Same Site Model (Evenson, Barnes, and Cohn, AJOT 2002) of fieldwork wherein you are placed for Level I fieldwork at your future site assignment for Level II fieldwork.

A form called the Level I Professional Development Monitor (PDM) is used by your Level I supervisor to document your performance on Level I fieldwork experiences.
