History of the Occupational Therapy
Department at Tufts
The Boston School of Occupational Therapy, one of the first of its kind
in the country, was founded in 1918 at the request of the surgeon general of the
United States Army. In 1945, the Boston School of Occupational Therapy became
affiliated with Tufts University. It now offers degree programs in occupational
therapy at the graduate level as part of the Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences.
The school is located on the Medford/Somerville campus, approximately five
miles northwest of Boston. On the campus, along with the Boston School of
Occupational Therapy, are the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Jackson, Engineering,
The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the Gerald J. and Dorothy R Friedman
School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and the Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences. Tufts University is distinctive in its long tradition of providing a
liberal arts education and in the variety of educational opportunities offered
by its graduate and professional schools.
The Boston School of Occupational Therapy has been educating students for
more than eighty years. The school attracts students, both nationally and
internationally, and prepares them for careers in all aspects of occupational
therapy. The faculty are well known for their expertise in teaching and are
recognized scholars in the profession. Together with our alumni, the students,
faculty, and staff continue the tradition of excellence at the Boston School of
Occupational Therapy.
