Our Vision
The vision of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to promote integrative research and education at the forefront of biomedical science and engineering.

The Mission
The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to prepare students to:

  1. identify, formulate and solve open-ended biomedical engineering problems by integrating and applying basic principles of biology and engineering/physical sciences;
  2. be creative, self-learning and innovative;
  3. be qualified to perform, manage or lead original research at the highest levels in private industry, research laboratories, and academia, and to teach in the field.
  Emphasis On Research
The department places significant emphasis on research in areas such as medical instrumentation, biomedical optics, biomaterials, and tissue engineering.

Kaplan's group: Cartilage tissue formation on silk fibroin porous sponges – The slow degradation rate of silk protein biomaterial matrices (top line) compared to the more rapidly degrading collagen sponges (bottom line) provides improved transport and more homogenous cartilage extracellular matrix formation over time in vitro – as shown by staining for key matrix components in cartilage – collagen type II and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
