Writing Workshops

I offer half-day, full-day, and day-and-a half writing workshops on a variety of topics.  I directed the Writing Across the Curriculum program at Tufts for 6 years, from 1998-2001 and from 2005-2008; and am the author of A Short Guide to Writing About Biology (8th ed).

Typical Topics:

  • Using informal writing to teach science
  • Teaching students to summarize information
  • Giving students something to say: Teaching students to read data
  • Using informal (ungraded) writing to teach, explore, and develop ideas
  • Guiding student revision (and without killing ourselves in the process—how to put the work on the students' shoulders, where it will do the most good)
  • How to get effective peer editing from students
  • The role of oral presentation in getting good writing from students
  • Designing assignments that teach
  • Designing useful grading rubrics—why? how?
  • For graduate students: writing brilliant papers and theses
