My research group is broadly focused on plant responses to environmental stress and heterogeneity. We addresses diverse questions using model and non-model systems. Typical questions include: how do plants defend themselves against insects, how do herbivores affect plant performance, and how does abiotic stress, in time and space, alter plant growth and development? Research projects typically combine field and lab work and integrate chemical, physiological and other state-of-the-art techniques.

This work includes studies that have explored:

  • Plant-herbivore interactions
  • Evolution of plant defense systems
  • Differential consequences of resource patches to plant growth and development
  • Consequences of climate change to forest and agricultural systems
  • The role of facilitation to Green Roof plant communities
