Laboratory: My lab is large (650 sq. ft.) and ideally located across the hall from my office.
Laboratory Facilities include: A Spectrophotometer (HP-8452A), High Performance Liquid Chromatograph, HPLC (HP-1100) with autosampler, Gas Chromatograph (HP-6890), CAMAG scanning densitometer, a -20oC freezer, fume hood, refrigerator, analytical and top-loading balances, sonicator with a circulating water bath, microcentrifuges, rotoevaporators, and freeze-drying and chromatography equipment.
There is also a plant growth facility that includes a 1000W metal halide light, water bath to prevent heat gain, equipment for hydroponic experiments, and instrumentation for measuring nitrate uptake, photosynthesis, and plant water status.
Computer: In addition to two Macintosh computers (G4 and G5) in Orians' office and lab, there is a lap top computer and several PC computers connected to the various instruments in the lab. The University maintains site licenses for SAS and several other statistical packages that are used for data analysis.
Other: Orians also has access to departmental equipment: greenhouse/growth chamber facilities, ultralow freezers, darkrooms, cold rooms, an autoclaving facility, and a water purification system.
Orians has an ongoing collaboration with Rich Ferrieri of Brookhaven National Laboratory examining the effects of herbivory on resource transport and partitioning in plants. Ben Babst did his PhD work on Populus at Brookhaven and Coco Gomez is doing post-doctoral work on tomato and tobacco.
