Students will prepare a management plan for a threatened or endangered species or ecosystem. Students will work in groups of one, two, or three and each team will prepare a term paper and a poster (on the term paper). The scientific literature, popular literature, the news, personnel experience, and the Internet are filled with examples of endangered or threatened species and ecosystems, and conflicts between environmentalists and industry. You can use any of these sources for and initial selection of a problem to be addressed. Your next step is to search the scientific literature (not the popular literature) to see what information exists that could be used to develop a management plan for a specific area. We will meet with librarians early in the course for training on searching scientific data bases.

Proposed topics must be submitted in writing for my approval (see syllabus for deadline date). Proposals will include a statement of the problem, the species involved, location, and a list of at least five references from the scientific literature that will contribute to your project. These references are to make sure you know adequate literature exists for you to do your project, and does not constitute the extent of your citations for the term paper.
