There are many interesting topics in biochemistry never addressed in class because of time limitations. However, once you have mastered the basic tools of literature search strategies, you can learn about these on your own. Pick the one exercise from the list of three below which most interests you.

Exercise 1:

Research on a membrane glycoprotein of unknown function (PC-1) has suggested that it may be involved in the etiology of non-insulin dependent diabetes. I would like you to structure a literature search to obtain three review articles on this protein and its involvement in diabetes that have been published in the last five years.

Exercise 2:
You are interested in the evolution of metabolic pathways and their coordination with mechanical processes such as muscle contraction. After a PubMed search, you found the following paper by R.K. Suarez published in December 1996.

Energy Metabolism, Enzymatic Flux Capacities and Metabolic Flux Rates in Flying Honeybees in Proc. Natl Acad. Sci vol 93: 12616-12620 (1996)

You are interested in what work has been done since this was published on this topic. Make use of Science Citation (found as part of Web of Science) to determine what papers have been published in 1999 and 2000 that make reference to the above work.

Exercise 3:
You have been studying glycolysis in biochemistry class and are interested in learning what research has been done on this area that specifically looks at glycolysis in newborn humans and is published in an English language journal. Structure a search to pull this information out. Provide me with the total number of hits you search brings up and a list of the titles of the five articles you deem most interesting (based on their abstracts).
