MEDFORD --
Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) became the second Tufts
University softball hurler this season to be honored as the New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the
Week today. She is the third Jumbo to receive a weekly award from
the conference office in three weeks this season.
Gelmetti, a senior lefty, won starts against Springfield,
Bridgewater State College and Trinity College last week. She tossed
two complete games and posted a 0.56 earned run average over 16
innings, holding opposing batters to six hits and a .118 batting
average. She had 12 strikeouts during the week.
At home against Springfield on Tuesday (Mar. 31) she had to go just
four innings for the win, an 11-1 mercy-rule victory for Tufts. She
allowed just three hits, a run and a walk while striking out five.
She was the benefactor of much offensive support again in a 14-0 win
at Bridgewater State on Thurday (Apr. 2), though she didn't need it
while allowing two hits and no runs in five innings. She capped the
week by nearly throwing a no-hitter in a NESCAC East Division game
at Trinity on Saturday. She got 26 outs before allowing a double,
instead finishing with a one-hit shutout.
Gelmetti is ranked fifth in NESCAC this spring with a 1.39 earned
run average in 50.1 innings, during which she's allowed just 36
hits. The team's career leader in winning percentage (36-7), she's
extended the mark with a perfect 9-0 record so far this spring.
This is the second Pitcher of the Week honor that Gelmetti has won
in her Tufts career. She was also selected on May 5 of this season.
Earlier this year, sophomore pitcher Izzie Santone (Madison, CT)
and senior RF/3B Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL) were
recognized by NESCAC as the Pitcher and Player of the Week on March
23.
