CADIGAN BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON GOALS RECORD IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

MEDFORD -- Confined to the sidelines last year while rehabilitating from knee surgery during her freshman season, Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA/Swampscott) was the scorekeeper for the Tufts University women's soccer team. Little did anyone know at the time that within a year she would be setting scoring records.

With two goals against Connecticut College on Sunday in the first round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament, Cadigan is now the most prolific single-season scorer in the team's 29-year history. She has 16 goals this fall, surpassing the previous mark of 15 goals set by Lisa Raffin 26 years ago in 1981. After finishing the regular season with 14 goals, Cadigan tied the record and beat it with the first and sixth goals scored by the Jumbos in their 6-0 victory over the Camels on Sunday.

A diminutive but tough player who has been at forward and midfield for the Jumbos this season, Cadigan has scored goals in 12 of the team's 15 games. She had an eight-game goal scoring streak from September 15 to October 9 and tallied a remarkable 10 game-winning goals for a Tufts team with a 12-3 record. Four times she's scored two goals in a game.

In the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) statistics, Cadigan's 16 goals are five more than Williams College's Gabrielle Woodson to lead the league. The Tufts sophomore also has five assists, and her 37 total points are 10 more than anyone else in the league. Her 16 goals and five assists for 37 points are currently the second-best scoring season in Tufts history. Raffin had 15 goals and 11 assists for 41 points in 1981.

Tufts, seeded second in the NESCAC tournament, will play fourth seed Bowdoin College in the semi-final round at Williams next Saturday.
