TEN-GOAL WEEK EARNS NESCAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE HONORS FOR ROBERTS
MEDFORD -- First-year midfielder Amanda Roberts
(Wenham, MA) of the Tufts University women's lacrosse team is
quickly emerging as an offensive threat in the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). She is this week's conference
Player of the Week after scoring 10 goals in two games.
Through six Jumbo games overall entering the week,
Roberts had scored seven goals for the Jumbos. With her play
improving as her first collegiate season continues, and her
opportunities on the field increasing with it, she had a
breakthrough week in the team's games at Bridgewater State College
on Thursday and against Colby on Saturday. Roberts contributed four
goals and two assists to a 19-6 non-conference victory at
Bridgewater on Thursday. She then netted six goals in a much-needed
15-14 comeback win at home on Bello Field against Colby Saturday.
At Bridgewater, Tufts scored the first eight goals
of the game including two by Roberts along with an assist. She added
two more goals and an assist in the second half during that easy
win, while also scooping up four ground balls, controlling two draws
and causing a turnover. Against Colby, Roberts scored three goals in
each half and all of them were clutch. Her first tied the game at
3-3 early. She then scored two in a row to cut a 7-4 Colby lead to
7-6. Her fourth was the first goal of the second half, pulling Tufts
within 8-7. The fifth was the first of a four-goal run that brought
the Jumbos from behind 13-9 to tied 13-13. After Colby scored for a
14-13 advantage, Roberts tied it again with a free-position goal at
2:19 of the second half. Tufts won the game with 12 seconds
remaining. Roberts added three ground balls and two draw controls.
For the year, Roberts now has 17 goals and seven
assists for 24 points in eight games to lead the team in scoring.
Her 10 draw controls are tied for third on the squad and she's a
factor defensively as well with nine caused turnovers.
Tufts, tied for 20th in the Intercollegiate Women's
Lacrosse Coaches Association poll last week, is 5-3 overall
and 2-3 in the league.
