AMHERST -- The Tufts University volleyball team lost to Trinity
College in five sets on Friday night in a NESCAC match played at
Amherst College. A win tomorrow in the final match of the regular
season against Amherst will clinch the #1 seed in the upcoming
conference tournament for the Jumbos.
After Amherst's 3-0 loss to Bowdoin earlier on Friday, Tufts could
have secured first place in the NESCAC by getting past Trinity. However,
the Bantams were upset-minded as they won the first, third and fifth
sets to take the match. Ironically, Tufts dominated the second and
fourth sets. Final scores were 25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 11-25,
15-8.
The Jumbos are now 7-2 in NESCAC and 25-3 overall. They are tied with
Connecticut College and Williams, but Tufts holds the head-to-head
advantage against both teams. Trinity improved to 12-9 overall and 5-4
in NESCAC to tie for sixth place heading into the final day.
Junior Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) had 14 kills and a
team-high 24 digs for the Jumbos on Friday night. Junior Dawson Joyce-Mendive
(Minden, NV) led offensively with 16 kills. Senior co-captain
Brogie Helgeson's (Santa Cruz, CA) 19 digs and four blocks by
sophomore Lexi Nicholas (San Diego, CA) helped the Jumbo
defensive effort.
Danielle Isaman had 15 kills and four blocks for the Bantams. Sarah
Blagden finished with nine kills, three service aces and 20 digs.
Kristen Anderson recorded 15 kills.
The Tufts match at Amherst tomorrow begins at 11:00. The Jumbos are
vying for their second straight #1 seed in the NESCAC Championship. The
Bantams play against Bowdoin at Amherst tomorrow.
