MEDFORD
-- With victories in three close sets, the Tufts University
volleyball team took a hard-earned 3-0 victory against Connecticut
College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC match at the new Cousens
Gymnasium.
The Jumbos, hosts of a NESCAC Quad weekend with the Camels, Bowdoin
and Wesleyan, improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Connecticut College is now 5-2 and 1-1 in NESCAC. Bowdoin defeated
Wesleyan 3-2 in the other match at Cousens on Saturday. Tufts had
defeated Wesleyan in four games on Friday night.
The teams were never separated by many points in each of the three
sets, but the Jumbos managed to finish off the Camels each time.
Trailing 20-19 in the first set, Tufts won 25-21. Down 8-4 early in
the second set, Tufts surged to a 12-11 lead and maintained a small
leading margin until winning 25-23. The third set was more of the
same, with the Jumbos coming away with a 25-22 win to take the
match.
Juniors Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Dawson
Joyce-Mendive (Minden, NV) were the offensive leaders for Tufts with
11 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior co-captain Brogie Helgeson
(Santa Cruz, CA) chipped in with six kills, while senior setter
Dena Feiger (Long Grove, IL) finished with 27 assists. The digs
leaders for the match were sophomore Audrey Kuan's (Los Altos, CA)
nine and eight by junior Kelly Engelking (Westborough, MA).
First-year Brittany Neff (Culver City, CA) had a nice little
all-around match with four kills, two service aces and three blocks.
Connecticut College was led offensively by 31 assists in the three
sets from first-year setter Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, CA).
Eleven of those kills came from senior Lauren Wise (Oakton, VA) and
eight were by sophomore Amy Newman (Los Angeles, CA). Sophomore Ally
Terlizzi (Mount Kisco, NY) was good defensively for Connecticut
College with 16 digs, while senior Meg Christman's (Wilmington, DE)
four blocks led the defensive effort at the net.
The Jumbos travel to Brandeis for their next match on Tuesday night
at 7 pm. The Camels next host Mitchell College on Wednesday at 7 pm.
