MEDFORD -- The Tufts University volleyball team began its 2008 season with a 3-1 victory against Stonehill College at Cousens Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Jumbos (1-0) gave their Division II counterparts their first loss of the season, as the Skyhawks fell to 6-1.

Visiting Stonehill came out on top in a hard-fought first game, 25-21. Tufts managed to turn the match around in the second and third games with 25-19 and 25-15 victories, respectively. They closed the deal with a 25-21 win in the fourth game.

Senior tri-captain Stacy Filocco (Olney, MD) led three Jumbos who finished in double-figures for kills with 15. Junior Dena Feiger (Long Grove, IL) set the offense with 39 assists and had three service aces to lead the team along with senior tri-captain Maya Ripecky (Chicago, IL). The Jumbos had 11 aces overall. Senior tri-captain Natalie Goldstein (Piedmont, CA) assumed her usual position as the team-leader in digs with 13.

The Skyhawks suffered through one of their toughest offensive nights of the season, hitting just .180 percent. They were led offensively by first-year Michelle Thornhill (Canyon Lake, CA) with nine kills and 27 assists from sophomore setter Andrea Wirth (Mesa, AZ). On defense, the Skyhawks got 11 digs from sophomore Therese Mance (Milwaukee, WI) and nine digs from Thornhill, who submitted a good two-way performance.

Tufts plays its first weekend tournament of the new season at Brandeis University September 12-13. They face Rhode Island College and Babson on Friday night. Stonehill is next in action on Saturday against Bridgeport and Caldwell.
