VOLLEYBALL REGIONAL FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

MEDFORD -- On Wednesday, the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball
Committee announced the selection of six sites for the regional
round of the 2009 Division III Women's Volleyball Championship. For
the second straight year, Tufts University was chosen as the New
England Regional host. The Jumbos will host the event in the newly
refurbished Cousens Gymnasium Thursday through Saturday, November
12-14.
The other sites selected were Hope College in Holland, Michigan;
Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; New York University in
New York, New York; Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri;
University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Southwestern
University in Georgetown, Texas; and University of Redlands in
Redlands, California.
The first-round matches for the
Tufts site on Thursday will be Williams (21-8) vs. Emerson (30-6) at
12:30 pm, UMass Boston
(29-4) vs. Westfield State (19-15) at 3 pm, Clarkson (28-6) vs. Wellesley
(23-9) at 5:30 pm, and Maine Maritime (22-5) vs. Tufts (28-4) at 8
pm.
On Friday, the Williams/Emerson winner will play the UMass
Boston/Westfield State winner in one semi-final at 4:30 pm. The
other semi-final at 7 pm is between the Clarkson/Wellesley and Maine
Maritime/Tufts winners. The regional championship match is scheduled
for Saturday night at 7 pm.
Tickets will be available at the door. Adults $5, Students $4,
and children (under 12)/senior citizens $3.
The Tufts Regional champion will play at the NCAA championship finals
to be held November 19-21 at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio and will be
hosted by John Carroll University and the Greater Cleveland Sports
Commission.
Tufts received its fourth NCAA Tournament invitation, which
includes three under Coach Cora Thompson. The Jumbos were selected
as a Pool C (at large) participant for the 2009 tournament. This is
the second consecutive NCAA berth for Tufts and the third since
2005. Last year, Tufts was eliminated by Wellesley College in the
Regional semi-finals. In 2005, the Jumbos played in the Regional
final and lost to Colby College.
