WILLIAMS COLLEGE WINS NCAA NEW ENGLAND VOLLEYBALL REGIONAL
TITLE
MEDFORD
-- Williams College won the 2008 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball
Championship New England Regional hosted by Tufts University with a
3-1 final over Wellesley College on
Saturday night (Nov. 15).
Williams (28-12) will advance to the NCAA championship finals to be held
November 20-22 at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Illinois and
hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. Wellesley finishes its
season with a 28-8 record.
On Friday (Nov. 14) in the semi-finals, the lower seeds both won and advanced to the
regional final. In the first match, #4 seed Williams College
earned a 3-0 victory against
#1 seed Springfield College (32-5). Later that night, #3 Wellesley
College posted a dramatic five-set win over #2 Tufts University
(29-4).
In opening-round action on Thursday, Williams
won in three sets
against fifth seed Keene State College (29-9).
Springfield eliminated #8 seed Maine Maritime Academy (19-9)
also in three sets.
In the only real competitive match of the day, Wellesley
went five sets to defeat #6 Endicott College
(24-15). In the fourth and final match, Tufts
breezed past #7
Bridgewater State College (12-24) in three.
This was the first NCAA Volleyball hosting opportunity for Tufts.
The other regional sites were at Juniata College in Huntingdon,
Pennsylvania; University of La Verne in California, New York
University in New York City; University of St. Thomas in St. Paul,
Minnesota; Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas; University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Sixty-one teams overall were selected for the championship.
