TUFTS TO HOST NESCAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

MEDFORD -- The top eight volleyball teams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) will convene at Tufts University's Cousens Gymnasium this weekend (Nov. 7-9) for the 2008 conference tournament. The Tufts Jumbos won the right to host the event with a perfect 10-0 NESCAC season, the first time they have finished first in the league.

Host and #1 seed Tufts (27-2) will entertain #8 seed Bates College (15-7) and #2 seed Wesleyan (20-6) will play #7 Bowdoin (17-16) when tournament action is served at 5:00 on Friday (Nov. 7). In Friday's 8:00 matches, #3 Amherst (20-7) takes on #6 Connecticut College (18-11) and #4 Williams (22-12) plays #5 Middlebury (15-10). Matches will be played at Tufts University's Cousens Gym main court and Chase court.

Friday's winners will play in the semi-finals on Saturday (Nov. 8) with matches at 1 pm and 3:30 pm. The championship match is slated for Sunday at noon. The conference champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Admission is free to all seven matches.

This is the second time that Tufts has hosted the NESCAC Volleyball Championship, including 1998. The Jumbos were crowned NESCAC champions in 1996, when the event was hosted by Hamilton College. This fall, Tufts has rolled to a 27-2 record and has been the #1 team in New England all season. They clinched first place in the league with a 3-1 win at Wesleyan on Halloween night. The team is two victories shy of tying the program mark for wins in a season, set by the 2005 Jumbos (29-7).

The NESCAC Volleyball Tournament has been conducted since 1990. Of the teams participating this weekend, Williams College has won seven titles and is the defending champion. Bates College, with four straight from 1990-93, has the next most championships. Amherst College has three conference titles, Middlebury has two and Colby and Tufts have each won once.

JumboCast, Tufts University's student webcasting organization, will carry live coverage of six tournament matches free of charge.
