SCHAEVITZ NAMED TO 2004 ALL-ACADEMIC VOLLEYBALL TEAM
MEDFORD-- Tufts senior setter Rebecca Schaevitz (San Rafael, CA/The Branson School) was recently named to the 2004 Academic All-District 1 College Division Volleyball Team's Second Team. She now has a chance to move on to the national ballot, where she will be eligible for recognition at the national level. The teams are chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Upon completion of three full years at Tufts University, Schaevitz, an electrical engineering major, has an excellent a 3.88 grade point average. She was recognized as an All-Academic athlete in 2002 and 2003 on the conference level, named to the Academic All-NESCAC team for two consecutive seasons.
Schaevitz led the Jumbos in assists this year, with 913 on the season, averaging out to a total of 11.13 per game that led the NESCAC. The senior notched 63 assists in a NESCAC Tournament match against Amherst on November 6, helping the Jumbos to defeat the Jeffs 3-2 and move on to the NESCAC Championship round. In her biggest matches of the season, Schaevitz had 60 assists in a 3-2 win over Springfield on October 23, and 56 assists in a 3-2 win over Amherst on October 16 to end the Jumbos' 12-match losing streak against the Jeffs. The senior also finished the season fourth on the team in service aces, with a total of 31.
The 2004 Tufts Volleyball team, under 2004 NESCAC Coach of the Year Cora Thompson, finished their season with an overall record of 28-6 (9-1 NESCAC), good for second place in the final conference standings. Tufts advanced to the NESCAC Championship match after defeating Bowdoin in the quarterfinals by a 3-0 margin on November 6, and Amherst in the semifinals, before moving on to face the 24th ranked Williams College Ephs in the final round. Tufts fell to the Ephs 3-0, placing second in the NESCAC Tournament.
