STEWART GARNERS VOLLEYBALL ALL-STAR HONORS
MEDFORD – Sophomore Jessica Stewart (Tallahassee, FL/Leon) of the Tufts University volleyball team has been recognized as one of the best players in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and in all of New England for the 1999 season.
Stewart was named to the All-NESCAC First Team and to the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) All-New England Second Team. She consistently led head coach Kris Herman's team offensively and defensively in 1999.
With 452 kills in 119 games, Stewart's 3.80 per-game average led Tufts and was second in the NESCAC this fall. She also led the squad with 59 service aces and posted a 21.8 hitting percentage. Defensively, her 321 digs led the team.
Stewart, the NESCAC Rookie of the Year last fall, is only 5-7, but is easily noticed on the court. "She's flashy," head coach Kris Herman said. "She can get up above the net and put the ball down hard. She's also a great defensive player, which people don't notice so much in this game."
A young Jumbo squad finished below .500 at 13-19 for the first the first time since 1983 this fall.
