SPRINGFIELD Sophomore Stephanie McNamara
(North Attleborough, MA) added to an already amazing outdoor season
for the Tufts women's track & field team by running a meet record,
school record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 35:32.79 in the
10,000 meters at the New England Division 3 Championships hosted by
Springfield College on Friday and Saturday.
McNamara's time to win the race was over 15 seconds
faster than the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 35:48. She broke the
regional Division 3 record of 36:27.96 ran by Julia Bensen from Williams
College in 2003. She also erased the 10-year old Tufts mark of 37:08.88
by Cindy Manning in 1999. McNamara is now automatically qualified in the
10K, 5K and 1,500.
The Jumbos placed sixth as a team with 56 points.
MIT won the meet with a 152.50 score. Tufts was fourth among NESCAC
schools, following Williams (143), Middlebury (68) and Bowdoin (62).
Junior Andrea Ferri (Dracut, MA) had a
runner-up performance in the heptathlon, scoring 3,789 points. She ran a
200 meters time of 26.88 seconds to score 722 points in the event. She
also had the best javelin throw out of 15 competitors with a launch of
89'9 (27.37m).
The Jumbos also received second-place points from
first-year Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA). Her 5'4 (1.63m)
effort in the high jump was near the 5'5 provisional qualifying height.
Sophomore Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA) scored seven points,
taking fifth in the long jump (17'7/5.36m) and sixth in the triple jump
(35'8 /10.88m).
Tufts is
at UMass next week (May 7-9) for the Open New England Championships.#
