MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's tennis team competed at
the annual New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament
over the weekend at Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith College. The
format was teams of two from each school playing two singles matches
and a doubles match with a best out of three final.
Tufts sent four teams of two to the event. The #1 team was comprised
of first-years Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) and Lauren
Hollender (Newton, MA). Senior Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL)
and first-year Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) were the second
Tufts team. The #3 tandem was junior Edwina Stewart (London, England)
and sophomore Jenn LaCara (Huntington Station, NY). Senior
tri-captain Laura Hoguet (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore
Nathalie Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) were the fourth Tufts pair.
Miller and Katz had the best showing for Tufts. Playing in the Gail
Smith Division (A flight), they defeated the Amherst duo of Jennifer
Ouyang and Anuja Ankola 3-0 in the opening round. In the round of 32,
Miller and Katz defeated Trinity's #1 team of Hillary Hoyt and Olivia
Merns by a 2-1 score. They were eliminated by MIT's Leslie Hansen and
Anastasia Vishnevetsky 2-1 in the round of 16.
Stewart and LaCara also won their first match in the Smith Division,
3-0, against Roger Williams University's Tracy Klein and Amanda Wolfe.
The Tufts tandem was eliminated in the next round by Bowdoin's Emily
Lombardi and Hannah Hoerner 2-1. In a consolation match, Stewart and
LaCara defeated Bates College's Katie Helfgott and Jacqui Holmes 3-0.
Lam and Hollender had a first-round bye in the Smith Division, but
lost 2-1 to Bowdoin's Brett Davis and Nikki Kuna in the round of 32. The
Tufts pair played a consolation match against Connecticut College's
Caroline Barone and Britt Badik, winning 3-0.
Hoguet and Schils played in the Chris Davis Division (B Flight).
After receiving a first-round bye, they lost 3-0 to Endicott College's
Nicole Breting and Lori Wardner. The Jumbos won a consolation match
against Suffolk's Rebecca Copeland and Kelly Conrad 3-0.
This was the last action of the fall season for Tufts, who will
resume their schedule in March during spring break.
