Match Results

Senior Erica Miller did not lose a game in fifth singles

MEDFORD -- For the second straight match, the 10th ranked Tufts University women's tennis team had little trouble with an opponent. After opening their 2009-2010 dual match season with 9-0 victory at MIT on Friday, the Jumbos cruised to a 9-0 victory against Babson College in the Jumbos' home opener on Sunday.

Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos were not quite as dominant as they were against MIT, when they dropped just two games in nine matches. However, Tufts was strong again with straight-set victories in every match and only 15 games surrendered to the opponent.

The Jumbos cruised through doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. The #1 pair of junior tri-captain Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and senior tri-captain Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI), the #2 duo of first-year Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) and senior Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL), and the #3 team of first-years Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) and Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) were all 8-1 winners.

In singles play, Miller in the #5 match and sophomore Jennifer LaCara (Huntington Station, NY) at #6 did not lose a game for the Jumbos. The most competitive match was the third, where Lam defeated Babson's Lorena Beccera 6-3, 6-2. Browne won on the first singles court (6-3, 6-1) against Babson's Jessica Huang.

The victory concludes the brief fall dual match season for the Jumbos with a 2-0 mark. The loss is the first of the season for the Beavers, who dropped to 5-1.

Browne and McCooey will compete in doubles at the upcoming Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Small College Nationals in Mobile, Alabama. The Tufts pair is the defending national champions.
