Championships

SAINT PETER, MINN. -- Tufts University sophomore
Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) was the surprise of the NCAA Singles
Championships hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College this weekend. She won three matches to advance to the NCAA semi-finals
before losing.
McCooey made a big entry into her first NCAA Singles
competition on Friday, defeating second seed Katie Tabb from Washington
& Lee in the first round. After Tabb won the first set easily 6-1,
McCooey rallied to win the match with 7-5 and 6-2 victories. In
second-round action later on Friday, McCooey advanced easily past
Pomona-Pitzer College's Rebecca Lange 6-2 and 6-4. That victory put
McCooey in the national quarter-finals, thereby earning her All-American
honors for the season.
On Saturday, McCooey kept it going with a two-set (7-5,
6-3) win over Vassar College's Nicole Pontee. That set up a national
semi-final match between McCooey and fifth-seed Cary Gibson from
Williams College on Saturday, which Gibson took 6-3, 6-2. The loss
finished an outstanding season for McCooey with a 24-8 record. In the
fall she won the New England #2 doubles championship with Hayley Young
and this spring she was an All-New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) First Team selection.
Jumbo first-year Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY),
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Rookie of the Year this
spring,
was also in action at the NCAA Singles Championships. She had a
strong opening win against Janelle Arita from Depauw, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.
However, she went up against top seed Siobhan Finicane from Pomona-Pitzer
in the round of 16
and lost 6-2, 6-0.
Gibson will play Finicane for the NCAA Singles title on
Sunday.
