WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Tufts University women's tennis team lost a heartbreaking 5-4 match against Wellesley College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Williams College. The loss ends the season for the Jumbos with a 12-7 record. Wellesley (20-4) advances to play host Williams tomorrow in the NCAA regional final at noon.

Tufts was up 2-1 coming out of doubles against Wellesley. They got wins from the second pair of sophomores Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) and Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL) and at #3 by first-years Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and Edwina Stewart (London, England). McCooey and Miller outlasted Wellesley's Jen Schwarzkopf and Trish Devine 9-7 at #2. Browne and Stewart finished the season unbeaten as a doubles pair with a 10-0 mark.

The Jumbos built their lead to 4-2 early in singles play. In the #1 match, Browne solidly defeated Wellesley's Jenna Mezin - ranked seventh in the Northeast - by 6-3 and 6-4 scores. McCooey was the first player off the court, winning the #2 match over Schwarzkopf 6-0 and 6-1. That was sandwiched around Tufts senior co-captain Andrea Cenko's (St. Louis, MO) 6-0, 6-3 loss to Devine at #4.

However, Wellesley rallied to win the #3, #5 and #6 singles matches to win the match 5-4. In the tightest match of singles play at #3, Wellesley's Meghan Stubblebine edged Miller 7-5 in the first game, but Miller dominated the second game 6-1 to tie the match. Stubblebine won the decisive third game 6-3.

Tufts was making its eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. McCooey will continue her season at the NCAA singles championships next week. Browne is an alternate.
