MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The #13 Tufts University women's tennis team was eliminated from the NESCAC Tournament by Amherst College, 6-3, in the semi-final round on Saturday at Middlebury College.

Williams College and Amherst, the top two seeds, will meet for the NESCAC womens tennis championship on Sunday morning. The Ephs cruised to a 9-0 win over Bowdoin in the other conference semi-final on Saturday morning. Tufts (11-6) will await word on an NCAA Tournament berth next week.

Amherst led the Jumbos 2-1 after doubles play. The #3 pair of first-years Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and Edwina Stewart (London, England) landed the only Tufts victory, 8-6. Amherst's Alicia Menezes and Brittany Berckes are the top-ranked pair in the country and won easily 8-2.

Amherst then won four of six singles matches to pick up the team win. Browne and Stewart were also the winners for Tufts in singles. At #2, Browne was in charge throughout a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Stewart worked through two challenging sets to win at #6 by scores of 7-5 and 7-6(6) against Amherst's Jennifer Murphy. Tufts senior captain Andrea Cenko (St. Louis, MO) came out on the short end of a three-set match at #4 (4-6, 6-0, 6-1), while sophomore Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) played very competitively in a losing effort at #1.

The NESCAC championship match will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday in Middlebury.
