MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Tufts University women's
tennis team advanced to the NESCAC Tournament semi-finals with a 5-4
victory over Wesleyan University at Middlebury College on Friday.
The Jumbos (11-5), seeded third in the tournament and ranked 13th
nationally, will take on second-seed Amherst College on Saturday
morning at 11:00 am in the semis at Middlebury, while top seed
Williams meets Bowdoin at 8:30 a.m. in the other semi-final contest.
The Jumbos had all they could handle against sixth seed
Wesleyan (11-7). Tufts led 2-1 after doubles play by taking the #2 and
#3 matches. Sophomores Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) and
Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL), tough to beat all season, were 8-0
winners on the second doubles court. Wesleyan's Anika Fischer and
Rachael Ghorbani won a tie-breaker to take the #1 doubles match 9-8(5).
The Tufts lead moved moved to 4-1 after singles wins at
#2 by first-year Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and at #4
singles by senior captain Andrea Cenko (St. Louis, MO). Alex
Sirois of Wesleyan defeated Tufts sophomore Laura Hoguet (Cincinnati,
OH) 6-4, 6-2 at #6 singles to make it a 4-2 match, but McCooey
sealed the match for the Jumbos with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ania Preneta at
#1 singles.
Saturday's semi-final winners will play for the NESCAC
championship on Sunday at 9:00 am at Middlebury.
