MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's tennis team
concluded its 2007-08 regular season with an 8-1 victory over
Trinity College on Saturday in a NESCAC match at Voute Courts.
Ranked 13th nationally, Tufts improved to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in
the conference. Trinity fell to 10-5 and 3-3.
Tufts set the tone for the day with a dominating doubles
performance. The #2 pair of sophomores Meghan McCooey (Cumberland,
RI) and Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL) and the #3 duo of
first-years Edwina Stewart (London, ENG) and Julia Browne (Old
Brookville, NY) both won by 8-1 scores.
McCooey, stepping up to the #1 spot in singles, went
three sets to defeat Trinity's Brenna Driscoll, who was ranked 37th in
the country entering the match. After losing the first set 6-3, McCooey
rallied to 6-1 and 6-3 wins. Browne was a quick 6-1, 6-0 winner in the
#2 match. The Jumbos also received solid victories from Miller at #3
(6-4, 6-0) and from junior Mari Homma (Eastchester, NY) at #5
(6-2, 6-4).
The lone Trinity win of the day came in the #6 singles
match where first-year Jillian Steckloff took a 6-4, 6-2 final.
The Jumbos and Bantams now await word on the NESCAC
Tournament pairings. Middlebury College will host the event next weekend
(Apr. 25-27).
