Meghan McCooey continued her outstanding sophomore season with another victory

WELLESLEY -- Eighth-ranked Wellesley College got the best of #13 Tufts University in a non-conference women's tennis showdown on Friday afternoon, 7-2. The victory avenged a 5-3 loss for Wellesley against Tufts in last year's NCAA Tournament. Wellesley improved to 19-3 overall, while Tufts dropped to 9-5.

The Blue swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Jenna Mezin (Haiku, HI) and Hali Walther (Navarre, Fla.) were 8-6 winners at number one while Trish Devine (Westport, MA) and Jen Schwarzkopf (Hinsdale, IL) won their #2 match 8-3. At third doubles, Shivani Saxena (Milan, Italy) and Jacqueline Shen (Calgary, ALB) picked up an 8-4 victory.

In singles, Wellesley took four out of the six matches to take the match. Sophomores Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) and Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL) continued their fine play for Tufts. McCooey had the easiest win of the match at 6-1, 6-1 in #2 singles against Schwarzkopf. Miller secured her victory in convincing fashion as well, defeating Meghan Stubblebine 6-3, 6-2 in the #3 match.

Picking up singles wins for Wellesley were Mezin, who was a 6-2, 6-4 winner in the top flight, while Devine picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles. At fifth singles, Saxena also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while Shen was a 6-2, 6-1 winner in the sixth position.

Tufts hosts Senior Day tomorrow against Trinity College in the final home match of the regular season. Wellesley does the same, returning to action tomorrow to face #3 Amherst College on Senior Day for Wellesley's Class of 2008.
