MEDFORD -- Led by the fine play of junior Mari
Homma (Eastchester, NY) and sophomores Meghan McCooey
(Cumberland, RI) and Erica Miller (Boca Raton, FL), the
Tufts University women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over
Connecticut College in a NESCAC match on Tuesday afternoon. The
Jumbos improved to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the league, while the
Camels dipped to 6-9 and 1-4.
Tufts won all three doubles matches, with McCooey and
Miller improving to 9-1 overall this year with an 8-2 victory in the #2
match. The first-year pair of Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY)
and Edwina Stewart (London, England) scored an easy 8-1 win in
the #3 match. The top doubles pair of senior co-captain Andrea Cenko
(St. Louis, MO) and Homma won 8-5.
It didn't take long for Tufts to clinch the match in
singles. Miller defeated Connecticut College's Jessica Bender 6-3, 6-1
in the #3 match and Homma was a 6-2, 6-1 winner against Lacey Herchek at
#5. McCooey won her first set at #2 6-3 before her opponent had to
default with an injury.
The lone Camel win came at #6 singles, where Caroline Barone won a second-set tie-breaker 7-6(2) after earning a 6-1 win in
the first set.
The Jumbos play at Wellesley on Friday before returning
home for their regular-season finale on Saturday against Trinity.
Connecticut College has a NESCAC match at Bates on Saturday.
