ORLANDO -- The Tufts University women's tennis team defeated Carthage College, 9-0, during its spring break trip to earn its first win of the 2008 spring season. Coach Kate Bayard's team improved to 1-2 in the spring and 3-3 overall. Carthage dropped to 9-7 overall.

The Jumbos swept doubles, with the #1 pair of senior co-captain Andrea Cenko (St. Louis, MO) and junior Mari Homma (Eastchester, NY) winning 8-3. Tufts went on to sweep the six singles matches, with first-year Edwina Stewart (London, ENG) getting off the court quickly at #5 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. She had moved up a step to #5 after playing sixth in the first two matches of the week. Sophomore Laura Hoguet (Cincinnati, OH) made even quicker work of her opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the #6 match.

Tufts, ranked 12th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will finish its week in Florida by playing Hamilton College in Boca Raton on Friday.
