Sophomore Meghan McCooey

MEDFORD -- Sophomore Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) and first-year Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) of the Tufts University women's tennis team will finish their outstanding 2007-08 seasons at the NCAA Singles Championships hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota May 16-18 at the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center and Brown Outdoor Tennis Complex.

McCooey was originally selected for the field and Browne was an alternate who was later added due to the withdrawal of another player. The draw for NCAA singles play will be announced on Wednesday, May 14. Thirty-two competitors from across the country will compete for the singles national title. The first two rounds will be held on Friday, May 16. The quarter-finals and semi-finals take place on Saturday, May 17. The NCAA championship match is scheduled for Sunday (May 18) at noon.

McCooey and Browne were the team's first and seconds singles players throughout the fall season. McCooey is the eighth-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Region rankings as of April 29 and Browne is #10. McCooey has compiled a 21-7 record this year, including victories in 13 of her last 14 matches. Browne has a 15-6 singles mark and has also been at her best lately, winning five of her last six.

Tufts also qualified as a team for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Kate Bayard's team defeated Roger Williams University in the first round 5-0 before losing a tight match against Wellesley College, 5-4, in the second round. The Jumbos finished with a 12-7 record.
